Hurricane Katrina the Storm Which Keeps on Giving

Author: Lance Winslow

Hurricane Katrina's wrath is far felt on the Entire Gulf Coast. The roadways are still out, airports just now coming online, sewer and water out in most areas, which were hard-hit and of course there is still no phone lines or power. We are still looking at 30 days to drain the Soup Bowl of New Orleans. What else can go wrong? Mosquitoes that's what!

If you have ever been to the Gulf Coast you know near the Bayou that those mosquitoes are highly evolved, in fact they have to be if they wish to feed on the armored reptiles like alligators. The CDC is concerned as are the local health officials and have announced an all out war on our blood-sucking neighbors. Will the war on Mosquitoes be won? Hard to say really, but if they can make a dent in the mosquito populations and curtail their rapid out of control breeding tactics, they might have a chance. Many Mosquitoes lay between 200-400 eggs and with the water and flood areas almost any place is a safe place to lay eggs.

Since the Gulf Coast is surrounded by wetlands and areas like New Orleans are now basically a swamp islands, the war on Mosquitoes will be no easy task. There is no species on the planet that can spread disease as fast as Mosquitoes. New Orleans officials have called in aerial spraying companies to kill the insects, although some say, it will not be enough.

I propose using UAVs Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to do the spraying from the air and AUV Autonomous Underwater Vehicles to move around the receding waters and emit the poisonous Mosquito from the flooded areas. We must prevent the Mosquitoes from delivering another round of death to New Orleans, think on this.
