Girl Scout Cookies: There's No Escape!

Author: Bonnie Lowe

They're everywhere! They come to your cubicle at work. They grab your attention as you exit the grocery store. They even knock on your door at home! You can't escape them.

Thank Goodness! What amazing treats the world would miss out on if not for the industrious Girl Scouts selling their famous cookies!

Whether you order from the daughters of your co-workers, your neighbors, your own family members or total strangers, you'll find that Girl Scout cookies are something to look forward to each year.

The Girl Scouts of America have been selling their delectable delights -- arguably America's favorite cookies -- nationwide since 1936. The money from cookie sales makes up the majority of each troop's operating revenue.

The most popular Girl Scout cookie? Thin Mints.

Other favorites include Caramel deLites (also known as Samoas) Peanut Butter Patties (Tagalongs), Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies (Do-Si-Dos), and Shortbread Cookies (Trefoils).

Some of the cookies have different names in different regions, because they are produced by different bakeries. But don't worry about the names... regardless of what they're called in your area, they are all delicious!

Two new cookies are being offered in some areas this year: Cartwheels, which are oatmeal and cinnamon; and Thanks-a-Lots, which are shortbread with chocolate on the bottom and the word "thank you" (in one of five languages) on the top.

The Girl Scout Cookies won't be for sale for long, as the season is winding down. But here's good news: the cookies freeze well. If you stock up now, you can be munching on them all year! And, of course, helping to support the Girl Scouts of America.

Why would anyone want to escape from that?
